Wow!  I can’t believe it’s September already!  Where did the Summer go?

Apart from the ongoing Battle of the Weeds on the Christmas Tree Farm, we managed to get out and about a bit.

We visited the Royal Welsh Show where we especially enjoyed watching the lumberjack competitions in the Forestry section.  The speed at which the guys chopped through huge tree trunks with an axe was amazing – even faster than our chainsaws!  And it was incredible to watch the climbing competition, in which the competitors literally ran up a 60 foot tree trunk to ring a bell at the top.

We also visited the Vale of Glamorgan Show in August.  The new food area with lots of local food producers all in one “eating zone” was a big hit with all of us!  Lunch consisted of Roast Beef rolls from cows raised in Colwinston.  There was also Fablas ice-cream (made just outside Cowbridge from milk from Dinas Powys) and the most delicious chocolate brownies, Baked by Mel (of Llantwit Major – she also makes award winning bara brith, yum!).  Blasus iawn!!

We managed to get away for a couple of weeks, thanks to a lovely family who we found through  They were delighted to come to Wales for a fortnight, to enjoy the beaches, visit Cardiff and the Vale, to look after chickens and to walk two golden retrievers in a Christmas Tree Farm.

In the meantime, we set off for the most westerly part of Europe, the Azores, a volcanic archipelago of nine islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.  We had a fantastic time island hopping and were impressed with the friendliness of the people, the tidiness of the islands and the quality of the food, especially sea-food.  A relaxing time was had by all….

But now, the children are back at school and Christmas begins in earnest for us.  We are making a list, checking it twice and getting everything organised for this festive season, because before we know it, it will be time to open the gates again!!

We look forward to seeing you soon!
